Teulu
Teulu (Family in Welsh) is a graphic novel I wrote, illustrated printed and set during the events of the Aberfan Disaster on the 21st of October 1966. This story is told through the perspectives of my Uncle Wyndham, who was one of hundreds of miners working to clear debris and uncover people in the disaster. My Aunty Ann who was only a child at the time, still remembers vividly the effects the disaster brought, not only to our family but the community as a whole. I created this project in My last year of university as a way to educate people on the history of my hometown of Aberfan and as a way to explore the events and trauma of the disaster through a medium which could uniquely convey it.
Making
After discussing the possibility of making my comic with my family I chose to focus on two members in particular, As previously mentioned these were my uncle Wyndham aunty Anne. I began a series of interviews with each in order to understand there feelings, experiences and out-look on the events of the Aberfan disaster. After this I gathered all my notes into chronological order and began working on thumbnails for each page and the dialogue they held. Finally i solidified my story structure and began working on penciling, inking and printing the comic into its final form.
